Weekly photo (finally!) is one of my all-time faves. I can actually smell all of the ripening cheese when I look at this picture.
I found Neals Yard Dairy in Borough Market after reading about it in a travel mag on my way to London in February 2009. I was on a university scouting trip, but really, I could easily be distracted by food and drink. Distracted I was!
This was the best cheese shop I’ve ever been in. The cheese that lines the walls on the left is Montgomery Cheddar, a nutty, pale cheddar that is made outside of London and some is sent to NYD to complete the aging process. I got to try some of the ‘ripe’ stuff, and also got to sample the Colston Bassett Stilton, one of the blue-est, stinkiest, and purely luscious cheeses I’ve ever had in my life. I was about to get on the tube and then a train to Luton for the day (mistake), and bought some CBS to keep me company. It actually saved the day.
Anywho, I’ve been obsessed with CBS ever since, and whenever I can get my paws on it, I do. I sourced some in Vancouver (Les Amis du Fromage), Toronto (Whole Foods), and while I was in Guildford, I knew I could nab some at the Selfridges Food Hall if I couldn’t make it to Borough. If you ever see this cheese anywhere, please trust me and get it. You will not regret it (unless you hate stinky cheese).
